Valentine’s Day on a budget

Valentine's on a budget“The greatest possession we have costs nothing, it’s known as love” - Brian Jett

Love may cost nothing but Valentine’s Day can get down right expensive. This year, the average American will spend $133.91 on candy, cards, gifts, dinner and more, according to the National Retail Federation. If you’re looking for ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day while keeping your budget in check, we’ve got some tips created just for you.

  • Cook a romantic, candlelit dinner for two. Can’t cook? Order take-out or a precooked meal from the grocery store and display it on your best dishes.
  • Have a picnic indoors. Spread out a blanket and create a romantic scene complete with your favorites.
  • Bake cookies, cakes or other treats.
  • Buy a plant and put it in a beautiful vase.
  • Frame your favorite photo or create photo album of the two of you.
  • Make a card and write a poem for the inside.
  • Write a song and perform it.
  • Create a playlist with your favorite love songs.
  • Create love coupons with things you will do for the other person like a backrub, pedicure or doing the dishes.
  • Watch your favorite movie together.
  • Do a simple day trip to a local venue like a museum or zoo.
  • Try websites like Groupon or Living Social for deals on massages, dinners, candy, flowers, wine and excursions.
